History

History Intent

At Brierley Forest Primary and Nursery School, we are committed to providing children with a range of opportunities to develop their historical knowledge and skills. The purpose of history education is to ensure children gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Our History curriculum aims to enable children to make links and deepen their historical knowledge and skills through a cyclical approach of revisiting key concepts taught throughout their primary education. We endeavour to inspire children’s curiosity to know more about the past. History teaching should support children to develop key historical skills including; asking questions, thinking critically, weighing evidence, sift arguments and developing perspectives and judgements. Children should develop their understanding of the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups along with their own identity and the challenges of their time.
