Our Intent
The Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education (England) Regulations 2019, made under sections 34 and 35 of the Children and Social Work Act 2017, make Relationships Education compulsory for all pupils receiving primary education and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) compulsory for all pupils receiving secondary education. Health Education is also compulsory in all schools except independent schools. PSHE continues to be compulsory in independent schools.
At Brierley Forest Primary and Nursery School we wholeheartedly support the philosophy of Relationship, Sex and Health Education and believe it is best taught as part of RSE/PSHE and citizenship education. We agree with the DfE that to embrace the challenges of creating a happy and successful adult life, children need knowledge that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy. Children can also put this knowledge into practice as they develop the capacity to make sound decisions when facing risks, challenges and complex contexts. Everyone faces difficult situations in their lives. These subjects can support young people to develop resilience, to know how and when to ask for help, and to know where to access support. Our programme continues to promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of children as well as preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life in a digital age.
Safeguarding our children is at the heart of what we do. To continue to support our children inside and outside of school, RSE and PSHE education teaches our children ways to stay safe and have the confidence and terminology for their bodies when and if needed.
Implementation
Studying the new RSE guidance 2026, we have carefully selected the most appropriate scheme to support the teaching of the curriculum. We have cross referenced all the information on the Kapow scheme of work against the criteria of the RSE guidance 2026. Below, you can find all of the subject content that your child will be taught from years 1-6 including citienship.
