We have had an amazing first term in Year 1 at Brierley Forest Primary School. Let me tell you a little bit about all the things we have been up to.
In English, we have been looking at classic fairy tales and retelling them in a variety of ways. We have been using the videos below to help us and we even put actions to them! It was so much fun. We drew story maps and ordered pictures and some of us even rewrote the whole story by ourselves! We have loved this unit of work.
In Maths, we have been exploring number and place value. We have been counting forwards (and backwards!) to 10 and putting numbers in order. We have solved missing number problems, no matter how tricky Mrs Roberts and Miss Stevenson made them! We have put 3 random numbers in order according to size and have begun learning how to spell the number words as well as write the numbers. We're practising daily writing numerals with the videos shown below. We have just started looking at addition within 10 and looking at different ways to represent a number story. We have found that representing a number story makes it easier to solve. Some of us draw pictures to represent our stories, whilst some of us use cubes or counters to help us. Now, we're using part-part-whole models by ourselves to make our own number stories.
In Project, we have been looking at where we live and questioning has everything always been the same. We know we live in Sutton-in-Ashfield and we have several things we like about where we live. For example, we like the park, the fish and chip shop, ASDA toys isle, McDonalds, Brierley Forest Park, the pond and of course we love our school. Not everything has always been the same, we have learnt that technology has changed our lives and has brought improvements to our days. For example, did you know there are now tablets in McDonalds? Did you also know that street lights and traffic lights have made it safer to move around our local area?
We also enjoyed looking at how the school menu has changed. Did you know that when Mrs Wainwright started at our school, pretty much all of the dinners were served with chips? We learnt that a varied diet is very important and that having chips every day is unhealthy. We designed fruit kebabs as a dinner option and had to make them ourselves! It was a very messy process but we loved using our senses to describe the fruits we chose to use (Miss Stevenson likes strawberries the best because they are red which is her favourite colour).
In Science, we have been looking at the human body. We have been learning about the senses; sight, smell, touch, hearing, and taste. We have been looking at the life cycle of a person and talking about how to stay healthy. We looked at the importance of washing hands to protect yourself and others from germs, and how important it is to wash them for 20 seconds with hot water and soap. We learned a song from the NHS website about washing hands and made a poster.
Wow, we cannot WAIT to come back after half term and learn more!
