Welcome to The Discoverers
Our Class Teacher is Miss Gale. In The Discoverers we always strive to be the best that we can be by following our school rules 'Ready, Respect and safe'. As a Discoverer we know that we have to face challenges to discover our true potential in all of our learning.
Welcome back to the second half term this Autumn! I hope everyone has had a lovely and relaxing half term break. I understand it is a worrying time at the moment but the children have returned to school in a positive manner and have truly blown me away with their fantastic efforts in their learning.
This half term our project question is 'How does where we live shape how we live?' The children have begun to break apart the question and looked at their local area and how they live before beginning to explore different places in the world and how different the children live there to us. We will locate different cities and countries on a map using geographical language and learn the 8 points of a compass as well as some OS symbols.
In Maths this half term we continue to work on addition and subtraction with a focus on subtraction to begin with. We will find many sums need exchange (asking our neighbour, not borrowing) so we will use the column subtraction method to help us to solve these. We will learn that in some 3-digit calculations we will need to exchange on both the tens and hundreds column to find the answer.
In English, this half term is focused on the theme 'to inform' and the children will create letters, newspaper reports and information leaflets focusing on the text 'The Tin Forest'. We will link this back to our project question thinking about how we affect the world around us.
In Science, this half term is focused on 'Forces and Magnets'. We have already begun to identify different forces including push and pull and the start and stop motion. We will continue to develop our knowledge identifying many different forces and expand our skills by experimenting with forces and magnets with various materials.
Please listen to your child read 5 times a week and record in their new reading record. We will change our reading books on a Wednesday each week. Children that do read 5 times a week will receive 10 dojos on a Friday so please make sure your child brings in their reading record each day for this to be monitored.
Online Learning/ homework
From today (2.10.2020) you will now find weekly spellings available on Spelling Shed and over on My Maths you will find weekly maths tasks based on the recent work we have been completing in class. Your child's logins are still the same. Dojos will be awarded to the children that complete these tasks each week.
Our PE day is Friday. Please send your children into school wearing their PE kit on these days. If it is cooler that day please ensure your child is wearing navy or black jogging bottoms, their school jumper and trainers. Many of our PE lessons will be outdoors.
Each half term a group of children will be selected from our class to take part in an enrichment activity at The Mill. This half term, children are taking part in team building activities. This will happen every Tuesday afternoon and the selected children will need to come to school in clothes suitable for the activity.
In Year 3, each class will go swimming at The Lammas centre. Our class will begin their lessons every Thursday from the 4th March 2021 until the 22nd July 2021. More details will follow closer to the time.
Please make sure your child only brings a water bottle, packed lunch (if they have one), their book bag (including their reading record everyday) and their coat. Please check your child has not taken any small toys, lip glosses or any item of make up with them even if they are in their coat pocket as they may let their friends play with these.
I look forward to our new year together
