Welcome to the Navigators
Your Class Teacher is Mr Wood. We are also supported in our learning by Mrs Hackett and Mrs Walton some days too.
We worked very hard in year 4 and now we need to continue that determined and resilient approach in Year 5 as well - let's make lots of progress!
This half term our project question is ‘What can we learn about resilience from our ancestors?' This project question has a local focus; 'Our place in the world and how we effect it.'
In Maths, we will focus mostly on number and place value for the first part of the Autumn Term. We will look at:
numbers within 1,000, previously developed in Year 4, progressing to working with numbers within 10,000, 100,000 and 1,000,000 in turn. Initially we will focus on ensuring our knowledge of numbers within 1,000 is secure. This includes techniques used for ordering, comparing and rounding. After securing numbers to 1 million, we will concentrate on negative numbers and learning to recognise roman numerals and what they represent.
In English, will will first be writing a narrative following our main character from the class book for this term, Cosmic. Using this text to inspire us we will create our own short story using a range of the rainbow grammar sentences that learnt in year 4 as well as starting to look at relative clauses.
In Science, this half term is focused on 'Space and Earth'. We will be gaining knowledge of the planets in our solar system and how they were formed.
Please listen to or encourage your child to read at least 3 x a week and record it in their reading planner. Navigators change their reading books on a Thursday each week. Please make sure that your child has their reading planner in school every day to support with our monitoring and allow us to sign them also.
Online Learning/ homework
There are weekly spellings available on Spelling Shed and weekly times tables to practise on Purple Mash so please make sure that your child uses these websites at least once a week too.
Our PE day is Friday. Please send your children into school wearing their PE kit on these days. If it is cooler that day please ensure your child is wearing navy or black jogging bottoms, their school jumper and trainers.
I look forward to our Autumn Term together
Please make sure your child only brings a water bottle, packed lunch (if they have one), their book bag (including their reading planner everyday) and their coat. Please check your child has not taken any small toys, lip glosses or sweets with them in the morning.
I look forward to our year together
